paen is addressed to Horus, The New Aeon Crowned & Conquering Child;
and could also be in praise of the Mithraic Lord of Light, Aion.
The Savior God Aion was the focus of the pagan cult of Mithra,
at one time the main competition to Christianity.
Aion is a solar deity, emphasized by his lion head.
His human body was depicted with a Gnostic serpent
curling upward around it--often embellished with signs of the zodiac.
The Gnostic Pagan Horus is also a solar deity, and his falcon head indicates
an additional identification with the element of Air--
thus the New Aeon reflects the Airy Aspect of Fire.
The lion, or Fire element,
so central to the Mithra cult, is also associated with Ma'at, the Gnostic
Pagan
Lady of Cosmic Law and Foundation.]
