Seat of the
Universal House of Justice,
governing body of the Bahá'ís, in Haifa, Israel
Bahá'í is a reformed Abrahamic religion
& an offshoot of Islam that has shed some of the more noxious doctrines of
its predecessor. Racial harmony, the
essential onenesss of the major religions & humanity are central to
Bahá'í. The equality of men & women
is also promoted. However, Bahá'í does maintain several Abrahamic Commandments
that, if not downright against human rights, are reactionary enough to give us
pause.
One is the prohibition of homosexuality,
claiming it is an abnormality that through faith can be “cured.” Supposedly
homsexuals are allowed in the organization, but are proscribed from any sexual
activity even in the privacy of their own home—they must also adhere to a
“don’t tell” status. All unmarried
persons are also prohibited from sexual activity as well. Adultery is, of
course, forbidden. Sexuality is at the core of our being, and when its
expression is condemned by society or a religion, the most natural expression
of self is turned against the person, creating the pain of always being an
outsider in heterosexual society--not to mention within one's chosen religious
group.
When a religious organization begins by
controlling the sexuality of its members—watch out. This “don’t ask, don’t
tell” social policy can hardly result in true fellowship—at least not for the
person who happens to be homosexual. THEY ARE EXPECTED TO "CHANGE."
If people don’t accept you for who you are, what’s the point of associating
with them?
No booze, tobacco or “recreational” drugs
either, but that’s not such a bad thing, particularly if you just don't want to
be around that sort of behavior. It’s a fair point that defines acceptable
behavior within the group dynamic.
Another problem that at first may appear as
a blessing, is the Bahá'í notion of equal distribution of the wealth. Sounds
good, but how is that to come about? Bahá'í rules out a secular socialist or
political system to carry out the redistribution. According to the Faith, this
process will be accomplished only when the majority of people in the world
accept Bahá'í as the true revelation for the current epoch, an epoch that will
last a thousand years.
Any of this sound familiar?
The Bahá'í concept of a correct world in
which religion & government are one is probaly the most traditional Islamic
idea Bahá'í continues to promote. For the most part believers seem to be
pleasant, well-educated people, yuppies, in fact. Judging by Bahá'í property
around the world, there is obviously a lot of $$$ floating around the
organization, and one has to wonder about that too, especially when it comes to
"non-profit" religious groups.
All religions represent special interest
groups & generate business to support their aims. They should be taxed just
like any other business. That they rest on the foundation of fantasy & wish
fullfilment is no excuse to financially reward them.
