a·pos·ta·sy

renunciation of faith: the renunciation of a religious or political belief or allegiance  [14th century. Via French from, ultimately, Greek apostasies, literally “standing away,”

from histanai “to stand” ]

it’s the same sad scene we see every day

you suckling orphan babies

& then making them pay

some are born addicted

to mom’s apple pie
others are just

born

crucified

a million starving contestants from the institution

must learn the art of temple prostitution

reality shows

only our real

destitution

waging our life on those

who can’t really care

clawing

american idol

breasts laid

pathetically

bare

you pretend to be Big Mommy

but baby knows best

you’re like a sky drawn in pencil

more like a greedy

black

hole

than

a slice of

ginger-

bread

threatening to withhold  forever

the simple pleasures you hid

making us believe in

whatever

all

the

violence

you

did

you delight in the spanking

the discipline

& breaking in

your captive phalange

rejected

army of kids

so your towers on fire

whadda you expect me to do?

i tried to put out one CON-flag-raisin’

but then there was two

how strange are your values

you still haven’t a clue

you supplied the motive

& the matches

even provided the tools

hearts burst in your wallet

and it’s undeniably true

the only gain from this war

always comes back to you

as fire drips from our hair

our fingers turn blue

it’s an endless mad cycle

circa 1492

you enslaved us with warlords

keen masters of despair

their vampire necks so

wasted

tasteless

& bare

gave us nothing real zero

no prices to compare

a phantom king reappearing

to a clown who’s not there

you confused the attorneys, cannoned a christ

fought to remove distance between wrong & right

created gospels torn from a history of pain

crossbows & jawbones

lurid fables of witchcraft

heretics hawking

holy hemp

& wolf bane

you called in the chaos

dark  Madonna on a train

then offered up the nails

to an unwitting Magdalene

you tried to make me drink hemlock

flushed thru a cracked rusty grail

forced me to wash in gods blood

from a bottomless pail

doomed to repeat

& forever unveil

black burning crosses

ridden straight out of hell

all i perceive has never been free

a simulated landscape

rising high above molten sea

steam noiselessly churning

the myths of equality

memories born on rejection

& disharmony

you have unerringly learned how

to fuck the world soul

& somehow in that dumpster

of a heart you always know

she’ll dust herself off

then come back for some more

we have so much in common—

just like me she’s

your whore

taken in the new roman senate

or on a cold bathroom floor

if there really was a god

she or he might intervene

such a deus ex machina

would steal

every scene

just for once play the good guy

try to even the score

now there’s a nice god

we all could adore

but as it stands now

yes, we’ve seen it all before

no one shows us the exit

or even draws a

front

door

the curtain explodes & the stage is on fire

the price of admission can’t get any higher

i will rush to the flames

like a babe in its arms

showing no fear

no signs of alarm

finally completing this auto-da-fé of the blest

i’ll be free from this trial & its senseless inquest

free from your sneer & infernal requests

to watch me blind walking backwards

& then passing

more tests

The Hour of Not Quite Rain

In the hour of not quite rain

when the fog was fingertip high

The moon hung suspended

in a singular sky

Deeply and beyond seeing

not wishing to intrude

Bathed in its own reflection

the water mirrored the moon

The tumbling birds have now sobered

from the leaves of their nursery

Like shadowy, quiet children

watching sleepily

Text Box: Beauty
       &
  The Beast

You're not a stranger to me
And you are something to see
You don't even know how to please
You say a lot but you're unaware how to leave

My darling lives in a world that is not mine
An old child misunderstood out of time
Timeless is the creature who is wise
And timeless is the prisoner in disguise

Oh who is the beauty who the beast
Would you die of grieving when I leave
Two children too blind to see
I would fall in your shadow I believe

My love is a man who's not been tamed
My love lives in a world of false pleasure and pain
We come from different worlds, we are the same, my love
I never doubted your beauty I've changed
I never doubted your beauty I’ve changed

Changed…

Who is the beauty
Where is my beast (my love)
There is no beauty
Without my beast (my love)

Who is the beauty
Who my love…?

Oh la bête, la bête
Where is my beast?

My beauty my beauty
My beautiful beautiful beautiful
Beautiful beast

Beside You

Little jimmy’s gone way out of the back streets
Out of the window, into the falling rain,
And he’s right on time, right on time
That’s why broken arrow waved his finger
Down the road so dark and narrow
In the evening just before the sunday sixbells chime

And way out on the highway
All the dogs are barkin’ way down below
And you wander away from your hillside retreated view
Went to wanderin’ nordhbridge way out on the railroad
Together all the tipping trucks will unload
All the scrapbooks built together stuck with glue
And I’ll stand beside you, beside you

Oh child, to never wonder why
To never, never, never, never wonder why at all
To never, never, never, never wonder why
It’s gotta be, it has to be

Across the crystal pavements
Way across the country where the hillside mountains glide
The dynamo of your smile caressed the
Barefoot virgin child

To wander past your window in the nighttime cross the floor
Crying as ecstasy surrounds you

This time it’s really found you

Through the night air your proud time is open
Go well on your merry way

against the pointed idle breeze

Past the footlights of the brazen silence easy
In the night you cry and you want spirits to tell you
Everything’s alright
Go ahead and do it one more time baby
You’re satisfied I guess, you’re way up and the sky comes down
Kaleidoscope

Open and just hold the lantern in the doorway,
For the freedom of it.
And you take the night air through your nostrils

And you breathe in, you breathe out, you breathe in,

You breathe out, you breathe in, you breathe out
And you breathe just like that, just like that

How high does it get you when it gets you high
You may not know how high it’s got you until you turn around
And I’ll point a finger at you, point a finger at you
You say which way, which way
That’s alright, we’ve gotten hip to it
Goin’ to do it right this time

Beside you
Beside you, beside you

To never wonder why
To never, never, never, never wonder why at all
Never never never never wonder why at all, Oh Child.

The Hunting Song/ Pentangle

From BASKET OF LIGHT

Transcribed from "Early Classics"
by Doug Johnson

As I did travel all on a journey
Over the wayside and under a dark moon
Hanging above a mountain

I spied a young man riding a fine horse
Chasing a white hart and all through the woodland
Head of a hunting party

And there followed after ten kings and queens
Laughing and joking, the white hart they'd seen
Bloodied running into the bushes

A plume to his helmet, a quiver and a bow
There's nowhere to run now, there's no place to go
The hunt is cast and ready

Still farther I journeyed through the hills and the valleys
Until upon the verge of despair I sat and rested
And there did pass a princely knight pursued by a lady
And this she did say:

"Oh may I ask you kind sir where you are going?
And pray tell unto me sir why you do hurry
Strange that I should meet you here, come sit by me.

"I have here a magic horn to deliver
And one drop from this silver and gold horn I hold, sir
Shall prove all to be false, lovers beware!"

"The gift that you bear for your brother the king
I gladly would carry to the banquet this even'
What fair sport this would be for the maidens at court."

Wearily I crossed the stream to the castle
Where I found shelter from the cold wintry wind
And food did I have and plenty
But the Lord and Lady seemed so sad
For these words they did say unto each other:

"My good lord, all off to war in thy armor
Leaving me here alone to weep and to worry
Take care lest misadventure
Shall overcome thy kindly heart
My good lord, all off to war in thy armor."

"My lady, you have no need for to worry
I'll return victorious and true unto thee
Take care, lest misadventure
Shall stain your heart and lead to woe
My fair lady you have no need for to worry."

While underneath the spreading oak a knight with white device
Upon a shield of black, and deep in grief and sorrow sings
His unrequited love
