The two-CD collection is one of the most handsomely packaged sets I've seen.
Another great & unusual addition (for this type of music) is that it comes
with a complete translation booklet. Strangely it doesn't list the performers,
but I'm pretty sure they are singers & musicians who are often associated
with Ravi Shankar productions.
Mantra enthusiasts will recognize many of the songs, but they are newly
interpreted here. The style is almost completely traditional, but there is a
very subtle & agreeable "wall of sound" in the background of many
chants. This is particularly effective with the OMmmmmmm...
There is a beautiful interplay bewteen the male & female lead vocalists,
conveying a lovely sense of Shiva & Shakti. In fact the vocals are
outstanding in both performance & composition. The arrangements/production
values are excellent A+++. There are 51--yes, 51! Mantras & each one is
perfection.
This is more a meditation collection than rock out, fusion mantra--but many of
the chants really work on physical energy too.
The mantras are vibrant & conducive to visualization as well.
What I mean by this, for example, is that the listener can visualize kundalini
at the base of the spine, and visualize its' rising through all the chakras. The
music resonates even more deeply within the spiritual body than rock out
mantras. Rock mantras are great for muscular stimulation; these etheric mantras
penetrate to the more subtle hormonal essence of the nerve centers known as the
chakras, the very foundation of physical/personality existence.
HARI OM (Disc 1, #23, over 7 minutes) is really stunning in its subtle, yet
ever higher range of intensity. If you'd like a good example why Hindu mantra
has been described as the ultimate music of the mind, this is it.
So if you love mantra, I hope you can get it from Amazon soon.
Thank you, Ganesh...
