Grace Slick is one of my all-time favorite
acid rock songwriter/singer and Jefferson Airplane my favorite acid rock
band--and SUNFIGHTER is the ultimate collaboration of Grace Slick and Paul
Kantner. The lyrics and music form an integrated whole, a musical creation of
depth & beauty.
SUNFIGHTER expresses perfectly what I call the
"Epic" approach to music and lyrics, a hallmark of Slick &
Kantner. Renegade Marxist playwright Bertolt Brecht first applied the term
“Epic” in reference to art. He meant it to illustrate his approach to
characterization in his plays (Three Penny Opera, etc.) In the Epic sense the
characters are interpreted as representing social forces, rather than
individuals. Kantner & Slick are no way Marxists & their politics as
expressed musically seem more opportunistic than radical. However, the lyrics
in Sunfighter cross over the strictly personal to express a unique cosmic/environmental
perspective. While casting a side ways glance back at the consciousness
expansion of the 60's, it is looking to the present and to the future. This
expansive social (and surprisingly positive view) as presented in SUNFIGHTER is
a timeless lyrical vision that really soars.
